When you look back on your life and how far you have come, can you recall those exact moments when you decided what you wanted your life to look like? Did the dreams you once imagined for yourself ever come true? Maybe at some point you told yourself, ‘Someday I want to make $30 an hour,’ and now you’re making over $30 an hour. Or maybe you thought, ‘One day I’m going to start my own business,’ and here you are now, running it. Every accomplishment started with a vision and intention to reach a goal.
But what if you had said to yourself, ‘I want to make $100k a year’? Do you think you could be making that much now? What if you had said, ‘I want to start my own business that brings in $500k a year and gives me more free time as a result’? What happens when our vision is just a little bit bigger than what we originally imagined for ourselves?
We often limit our dreams because we visualize what we believe is plausible for ourselves. You only ask so much from life because you can’t imagine making $100k a year when you’ve only got a bachelor’s degree and not enough job experience (or so you tell yourself).
Sometimes, we also limit what we ask God or the universe for because we don’t want to feel greedy. We tell ourselves we just want enough to survive and maybe a little extra for taking trips here and there. But someone, somewhere, on the internet once said, ‘Why are you afraid to ask for more? The universe is not on a budget.’ That completely opened my eyes to how little I had been asking for.
I’ve always asked for ‘just enough,’ and not much more than I felt I needed to do the things I wanted in life. I can recall various times in my life when I asked for something. Once, I said out loud, ‘You know what I want? I want to work as an operations manager for a small company.’ And guess what? That’s exactly what I’m doing now. I also once said out loud, ‘I want to travel for work,’ and you may or may not believe it, but this job is giving me that opportunity too.
So I ask myself, what If I had asked for more back then, would I have it now? I think we need to dream so much bigger than we do. We need to believe in ourselves enough to know that we can have it, whatever ‘it‘ is. What would it hurt to write down a dream, then ask yourself, ‘What would a slightly bigger and better version of this dream be?’ Write that dream down instead!
Let this be your invitation to dream a little bigger with me. I’ve put together the ‘Are You Dreaming Big Enough?’ Questionnaire to help guide both you (and myself) toward a more abundant life.
